Swimming Competitions An overview FINA is the Federation Internationale de Natation the world governing body for swimming. FINA writes the rules for Olympic-type watersport. All of the FINA sports are: pool swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, open water swimming, and masters swimming. FINA has recognized national governing bodies in each country that carry out FINAs regulations and directives, and have each country votes on membership on the FINA board. It is responsible internationally for the high performance representation of the sport. The members of British Swimming are the three Home Countries national governing bodies of England (ASA), Scotland (ScottishSwimming) and Wales (Swim Wales). British Swimming seeks to enable its athletes to achieve gold medal success at the Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games http://www.swimming.org/britishswimming/about-us/about-british-swimming/about-british-swimming/1747/ Speaking about the build up to the 2012 Olympics British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes said: â€Å"Preparations for all of our sports are right-on-track to build on the success that the aquatics team enjoyed in Beijing and our legacy programme is also taking shape. â€Å"We are confident that we will not only see British success in the pool but we will also see swimming moving to a new level with more people swimming more often and having more fun in the pool.† Olympic History It was at the 1896 Olympics where swimming was introduced as a sport, which was held in open waters. At that time there were only two events, which were the 100 meters and the 1500 meters and only involved men competing. Following the popularity of the sport at the Olympics, more freestyle events were introduced, shortly followed by other strokes such as backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and also the individual medley. The first time a pool was used instead of the sport taking part in open waters was at the London 1908 games where it was built inside the athletics track. It wasnt until the 1912 Olympics where women were allowed to compete in this sport and this was only due to a group of people that is now known as the international Olympic committee that made it possible. The Olympics have developed so much now that there is a total of 34 swimming races, 17 of which are for men and 17 for women. The latest event which has been added to the competition is the 10km Marathon Swim whi ch only took place for the first time at the Beijing Olympics 2008. 2012 Olympics At the 2012 Olympics in London the swimming events will take place in the newly built Aquatics centre over a period of 16 days from the 28th July to the 12th August. There will be a total of 850 athletes competing for 34 gold medals. It has been confirmed by the International Olympic committee that there is an unchanged swimming programme for the 2012 Olympics and will follow the competition schedule of that at Beijing 2008. It features a spectacular wave-like roof that is 160m long and up to 80m wide, giving it a longer single span than Heathrow Terminal 5.† London 2012 The aquatics centre will hold a maximum capacity of 17,500 seats for both the swimming and diving and is said to be the gateway to the whole of the Olympic park. There also plans in place for the venue to be used after the games by turning it into a permanent leisure facility for the community. ‘In legacy the Aquatics Centre will play a major role in building a more active and healthy community in the East End of London and will act as a focal point in relation to healthy activity, combating obesity and improving health British Swimming Key Athletes Michael Phelps Last Olympic Games Michael Phelps took his total to 14 gold medals which is the record for anyone competing at the Olympics. 8 of these medals came from the last Olympic Games held in Beijing where he also broke 7 world records and 1 Olympic record. This year Phelps has gone from being described as probably the best Olympic athlete ever to being scrutinised by the public for being pictured smoking a marijuana pipe. Follow this release Phelps has doubted whether he will even swim in 2012 or decide on retiring early. Phelps quotes â€Å"â€Å"Yeah, there are still goals that I have in the pool, 100 percent. But Im not going to let anything stand in my way. If I decide to walk away, Ill decide to walk away on my own terms. If its now, if its four years, who knows. But it is something I need to think about and decide what I want to do.† http://www.dailystab.com/michael-phelps-considering-dropping-out-of-2012-olympics/ If Phelps does decide to compete in the 2012 Olympics it will be interesting to see how he bounces back from this and whether he can live up to the expectations people put on him and the high standard of performance that the people have come to expect. Rebecca Adlington Rebecca Adlington stormed to success at the previous Olympics become Britains first Olympic swimming champion since 1988 and also the first British swimmer to win two gold medals since 1908. This was from competing in both the 400m freestyle and also the 800m freestyle, where she also broke the world record. In 2009 the IOC announced its plans to keep the swimming schedule the same as it was in Beijing, following ideas that the 800m for women was to be removed and replaced by the 1500m so that the events would be the same as the mens. This therefore is good news for Adlington as if the GB team qualifies for that event in 2012 she will be able to defend her title.

What are the arguments for and against, greater control being exercised over business by government? How do these arguments differ between the countries of the group members? We would like to start the answer by an example of USA when they were heavily involved in the industrialization and expansion. People of all different occupations were involved in some part of the industrial revolution. However there was a debate over the government intervening in the building of infrastructure. Chief Justice John Marshall made many landmark court decisions which played a role in defining the business climate that developed during the industrial revolution and strengthened the central government’s control over the business. Thus finally the government was involved in the early stages of the industrial revolution. The government’s decision of this era laid the ground work of the future U.S. growth of the nation. Without these pro-business decisions, the United states would not have made the change from being agriculturally dependent to the industrialized nation it is today. For example in China, local governments stand passively by as private firms aggressively reject long-standing official right because the government officials in south China are increasingly anxious to shed their responsibility for economic management. As a result, China’s southern provinces have already begun the process of separating government from business, while, in the north, leading officials emphasize the slogan â€Å"separate government from enterprises† but, fearing slow growth, practice the opposite. APN aims at promoting the concept of privatization and encouraging its implementation in African countries by sharing legislation and other relevant documentation; studying the nature and scope of privatization in each country according to its special circumstances and needs; and monitoring the process of privatization in Africa, identifying problems and obstacles and offering advice where required. The positive view of privatization suggests that it went ahead, in spite of domestic opposition, because politicians and bureaucrats perceived real benefits to themselves and their supporters. They could influence the sales to their own benefit, while, on the other hand, a more focused public sector improved service delivery. The Wizard of Oz This scene Is towards the closing of the film. The Wizard has granted all wishes he has promised to Scarecrow, Tin Man, and The Lion and now Dorothy is awaiting to where the all of the townspeople of Emerald City are gathered. Toto Jumps out his basket to chase a cat and Dorothy chases after which in turn causes her to miss the ride home. She begins to get distraught because she does not know how she is going to get home until The Witch Of The North appears and informs her on how to get home. I believe this scene relates to rest of the movie because it culminates everything that has happened in a few minutes. At this point Dorothy realizes she had the power all along to go home. The entire story was about characters going to see the Wizard to get something that each of them possessed all along. Dorothy possessed the power to go home whenever she chose to. Scarecrow wanted a brain but was intelligent already and was on display throughout the film especially when they battled the witch. Dunbar is and the Indian arrive at their living area at night and he tells him that he is full. The Indian begins to check out Let. Dunbar Jackets and he asks if he would like to wear it. Raiders of The Lost Ark The scene begins when Indiana and Marion are trapped in the area where they have found the ark to be. They are in a below ground tomb area that is filled with thousands of snakes. Indiana seems to have met his doom by being trapped in this tomb when the concrete cover is put back on top of the entrance traps he and Marion inside with the snakes. The rope Indy used to lower himself has been removed and the entrance seems to be over 50 feet high. With the fire from their stakes dwindling they are having a hard time keeping the snakes away. Indy notices that more snakes are entering their area from a wall that has drawings carved into t. They are entering through the eyes of the carvings. Indy believes that their must be something that is allowing more and more snakes to enter on the other side. He then devises a plan which has him tip over a giant statue that is in the tomb to crush escape from their demise. This scene to is one example of the reoccurring action throughout the entire film. Indiana seems to always find himself in sticky situations and it does not look promising for him to prevail. Somehow though, Indy always uses his tools or what’s around him to escape any situation, even those that seem like their s no way to prevail. This is what make the movie interesting because you are rooting for Indy and hate to see him not prevail, and then somehow he does which in turn allows him to continue on his quest of securing the Ark. Pearl Harbor This scene begins at the hula lounge where men and women stationed at Pearl Harbor occasionally attend to catch a drink with their buddies. This time is different thought because Raff is now in attendance. Everyone within the Reef’s unit, including his best friend Danny, believed him to be dead after he volunteered for an overseas mission and his plane was shot down. No word on Reef’s status or his whereabouts were given for over 3 months. During this time while Danny was attempting to console Evelyn, Reef’s girlfriend (or ex- girlfriend since he was believed to be dead), but during this time they both began to fall in love with each other. The situation has now became extremely complicated due to the fact that Raff is now ‘back from the dead† and is having to deal with Danny and Evelyn relationship. Words are exchanged and the two break out into a fight that causes a large brawl at the lounge. The Amp’s show up and the two set aside their difference and Danny pulls Raff away from the crowd so they both can get to safety. This is a small portion of a longer and more major scene but this small portion acts as an indicator for me throughout the entire film. The attack came as a surprise to everyone. A lot of casualties were witnessed. But the reason more casualties were not suffered because individuals were able to put issues aside and come together for a greater purpose. So many different people came together to aid the injured, to help the war effort by firing weapons first hand or flying planes to subdue the attack that could’ve gotten worse than it already was.
